These images were taken of people watching jumpers plunging into the icy waters of Goose Lake in Anchorage, Alaska. The polar plunge is a Special Olympics affair that raised over $323,000 for the December 2015 event. After plunging into the freezing water participants can jump into a hot tube. There was free coffee, hot chocolate, soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for everyone. It was overcast and way to warm for December. We had a terrible winter in 2015 with little snow.

It was early morning with dark clouds when most of these images were taken. Although I used a monopod, many photographs were soft because of subject movement. Exposures were typically 1/20 to 1/80 with IOS 800. There was no contrast and my camera sometimes took a long time to acquire focus. I used my D810’s setting for Group Focus and the feature did not provide the accuracy that my standard Single Point focus option offers. Single point allows me to direct the focus on people’s eyes. I will remove any image upon request by contacting me at bartz@englishoephotography.com.
