Alaskans celebrate summer solstice in a big way. In Anchorage we have 22 hour of functional light for all types of activities. People can enjoy the sun at concerts, marathons, festivals, carnivals, baseball games and salmon derbies. These images were taken on Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage were families gather to enjoy sponsored events. The bright light, long hours and events provide tourists with many opportunities to enjoy Alaska.
It was hazy so exposing for flesh tones was fairly easy. There were no harsh shadows so images of people were pleasing. I used my Nikon D600 and Nikon 70-200mm f/4 lens to capture images. All images were shot at f/4 to keep the focus on people’s faces. The shallow focal plane kept backgrounds out of focus so surrounding environments did not distract attention from images of people. Most exposures were 1/640 at ISO 160. I used a monopod. These are photos of typical Alaskans. The skate boarders were putting on a demonstration for kids.
