This is the second year I have taken the 5-hour Alaska Railroad passenger train from Anchorage to Seward, Alaska to photograph the 4th of July Mount Marathon race. The train stopped at the Spencer Glacier to pick up travelers hiking in the Chugach National Forest. I encourage people to travel the Alaska Railroad for breath taking scenery.
Spencer Glacier is seen in image 15. The photographs of the tunnel were taken at 1/15 and 3.0 second shutter speeds. Several of the images show the mudflats in Turnagain Arm. The mudflats are glacier silt that turns to a quicksand like substance when covered water and are dangerous to walk on. Image 8 is a view of Twentymile River Valley.
I used my Nikon D7000 with Nikon 24-120mm f/4 and 16-35mm f/4 zoom lens. The 16-35mm f/4 lens produced the best images because it minimized camera shake and movement of the train. I used ISO 400 so I could use shutter speeds of 1/200 to 1/640. I needed the fast shutter speeds for sharp images.
